We’re Across The Line! Join us to look back on a thrilling weekend of racing from across the UK.

Bedford School continue to build momentum

With Henley Royal Regatta fast approaching, Bedford School BC picked up a crucial win at Reading Town Regatta. Throughout the season, the Bedford boys have been trending in the right direction and building a highly respectable CV including eighth at the Schools’ Head of the River, making the A Final at the National Schools’ Regatta, and, they were the fastest junior crew at both Nottingham City and Bedford Regattas. Now, over the 800m course at Reading Town Regatta, they’ve beaten a number of their competition in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge who have travelled from overseas.

In their opening heat of Open Junior Eights, Bedford School BC put a length into Marin Rowing Association who have made the trip from across the pond. Marin, winners of the bronze medal at US Youth Nationals, were themselves comfortably ahead of Green Lake, USA. The final was plain sailing for Bedford School, beating Boulogne 92 Rowing Club, France by three lengths.

Across the day, there was some incredibly close racing. Spectators who were on the riverbank early were treated to a thrilling finale of the second heat of the Open J16 Single Sculls. Across the three heats, Henley RC had four scullers racing but ‘Green’ was pushed right to the wire, beating their opposition from Marlow Rowing Club by just two feet. The three heats were the opening races of the day and all of them were won by scullers from Henley RC. In the final, with club bragging rights on the line, it was ‘Bartels-Thiel’ who crossed the line first, winning by clear water.

As was the case with the Open Junior Eights, plenty of the other events featured overseas crews getting some final preparation in ahead of Henley Royal Regatta. Canberra Girls Grammar School, Australia won the Women’s Junior Quadruple Sculls while Marin would be victorious over Radley College BC in the Open Pairs. It was an all-American affair in the Open Coxed Fours final as Riverfront Recapture beat the University of San Diego and we’ll see both of those crews on the same side of the draw when they race later this week for the Prince Albert Challenge Cup.

Finally, Band Three Open Singles also served up one of the closest races of the day. In the semi-final, Magdalen College, Oxford held on for an absolutely nail-biting finish to win by just two feet over their opposition from Bournemouth University. In the final though, the college sculler faced tougher opposition and lost out to a great opponent from King’s College School Wimbledon.

Peterborough City puts on a show for the juniors

Headington School BC won the Victor Ludorum at a hot and sunny Peterborough Junior Regatta. The school finished the day’s racing with 68 points, 11 clear of Bewl Bridge RC in second place, as The Windsor Boys’ School BC rounded out the podium.

In the fastest event of the day, the Open J15 Octos, Infinity BC topped the time trial before winning their final, two seconds clear of The Windsor Boys’ School BC. It was a similar story for Windsor in the J14 Octos, an event won by Bedford School BC. VL winners Headington School BC were hugely successful, winning the WJ13 and WJ14 Octos while it was St George’s College BC who won the WJ15 event, three seconds ahead of Leeds RC.

In the Single Sculls, The Windsor Boys’ School won the Open J15 Yellow A Final, while it was Bedford RC who won the Blue event. In one of the most dominant performances of the day, Nottingham and Union BC won the WJ15 Single Scull A Final by more than eight seconds with St Ives RC and Notts County RA placing second and third respectively.

Both J14 Single Scull categories were amongst the largest entries of the weekend. The Open event was won by Globe RC beating Northampton RC, Bedford RC and Sudbury RC in the final. In the Women’s event, there was delight for the local supporters as Peterborough City RC absolutely motored to victory, winning on home water by 13 seconds.
