Stannard wins inaugural “Nick Broad Award”
GB Rowing Team Coach Paul Stannard has won the inaugural “Nick Broad Award for Emerging Talent”.
Stannard was presented with the Award at a gala event hosted by Leaders In Performance at Chelsea FC’s ground recently.
“I am very honoured to be the first recipient of such a prestigious award. It was all totally unexpected”, said Stannard. “It is great to be recognised for the work that I did whilst part of the GB Rowing Team’s Start Programme”.
Stannard was the coach who worked to develop rowers based at the University of Bath’s GB Rowing Team Start Programme, including Helen Glover and Heather Stanning who went on to become Olympic Champions in the women’s pair at London 2012. Their gold was Team GB’s first of the Games.
Nick Broad was a highly respected and talented professional in the sports performance world who tragically died in January of this year in a car accident in Paris.
At the time he was working alongside Carlo Ancelotti at Paris St Germain football club having built his career with Premier League teams Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Chelsea.
Nick was an incredibly popular member of the sports performance community and was known for giving many young people their first work experience in sport. Many have gone on to build their own career in elite performance thanks to Nick.
The “Nick Broad Award for Emerging Talent” recognises the next generation of performance leaders.
Since initiating the Award in early August, Leaders in Performance received a huge number of nominations, from across world sport, for coaches and performance professionals who have achieved great things.
After much deliberation and the expert thoughts of a judging panel (which included Sir Dave Brailsford, Stuart Lancaster, Steve McClaren and Billy Beane amongst others), Stannard, nominated by Sir David Tanner, was judged to be the winner of the inaugural award, for his contribution to Glover and Stanning’s success and the START Programme.
