Masters Champs returns with a bang

Rowers from across the whole country enjoyed fine weather as they returned to the first on-water British Rowing Championships event since 2019

It’s been 671 days since crews last took to the water for a British Rowing Championships but today over 650 rowers were able to return to the water on a blazing day in Nottingham for the 2021 British Rowing Masters Championships. 259 crews from around 100 clubs competed for the coveted title of British Rowing Champion with wins from clubs right across the UK from Portora BC in Northern Ireland to Bewl Bridge RC in Kent and York City RC to Dart Totnes RC.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Chris Anton was delighted that the planning had worked out, “When we began our planning for this event, we really didn’t know what to expect. I’m thrilled that today’s competitors have not only been able to race in a COVID-Secure environment, but have also had a very enjoyable day’s racing.

“I’m really grateful to the crews who have travelled from all parts of the country and we’re looking forward to welcoming back crews to a, hopefully more normal, Masters Championships in 2022.”

Andy Parkinson, Chief Executive Officer of British Rowing, praised the contribution of the volunteer organising committee, “It’s fantastic to see so many crews able to enjoy getting back on the water for a British Rowing Championships today. It was wonderful  to feel the buzz of an event again and it’s a real testament to all the hard work that Chris and his team of volunteers have put into organising a terrific event.”
