British Rowing’s yearbook, the 2020 Almanack, is in the post (directly from the printers) and on its way to life members and direct debit members. Copies will be sent to affiliated clubs when the coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

The 352pp A5 book is jam-packed with information about the sport from the fastest times at Henley Royal and individual club records through to the masters’ handicapping table and the colour of different club blades.

There are comprehensive records of the 2019 racing year, and the detailed governance information includes the 2020 Rules of Racing making the Almanack the go-to reference guide for the rowing community.

After putting the finishing touches to this year’s Almanack, Editor Maggie Phillips said: “This will be my 10th as editor – how time flies by.

“Throughout this time, I’ve come into contact with contributors from aspects of our sport of which I had only minimal previous knowledge – now I know a lot more!”

The Almanack also explores behind the scenes, featuring different areas of the sport in each edition.

“Over the years multi-lane fine boat rowing has been very much on the rise,” said Maggie. “However traditional side-by-side events are still very much enjoyed as our article covering the 150th anniversary of Sudbury Regatta explains.”

It was fortunate that the 2020 Almanack was able to be printed just before the current coronavirus lockdown came into force.

Maggie added: “As the 2020 Almanack went to print, the rowing community was coming to terms with the aftermath of Storms Ciara and Dennis. These cancelled numerous events and flooded many clubhouses, causing thousands of pounds of damage in many cases.

“Now we all face a new challenge – COVID-19. This may well affect us all for many months to come.

“I wish you all well through these difficult times.”
