Claire will chair the panel that provides advice and guidance to help maintain high standards of multi-lane umpiring in England and Wales, whilst also recommending which FISA qualified umpires are nominated for international competitions by British Rowing.

Claire brings extensive rowing experience to the role, having taken up the sport as a junior rower before qualifying as a British Rowing umpire in 2004 and a FISA umpire in 2014. Claire has held a broad range of roles within rowing including on the organising committee of the British Rowing Junior Champs, Women’s Head and Henley Women’s Regatta as well as sitting as a member of the Multi-Lane Umpiring Panel.

Taking up the position, Claire expressed her pleasure at continuing to work with the community of rowing umpires, “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Chair of the Multi-Lane Umpiring Panel and grateful to all those who have helped me get to this point in my umpiring career.  I look forward to working with the existing team of multi-lane umpires and those who will achieve the endorsement in the future.”

Outgoing Chair, John Hedger, was pleased to be leaving the panel in good hands, “Claire is well-recognised as one of our leading FISA umpires and has already had umpiring experience at major FISA championships.  I hope that her work domestically in training umpires and chairing Race Committees will continue to encourage young and female volunteers to apply to develop their umpiring skills at the higher levels.”
