LYR receives prestigious award

London Youth Rowing has been honoured at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Annual Awards, receiving the Community Partner of the Year Award in association with Sport England at a glittering ceremony in London’s West End.

More than 114,000 people took part in the 2013 London Youth Games in a record-breaking year for the event, and Olympic gold medallists Christine Ohuruogu and Joanna Rowsell were among the guests at Tuesday’s ceremony.

16 London boroughs took part in this year’s London Youth Games rowing regatta, and the indoor rowing competition has grown to become one of the largest competitions of all 33 sports.

“We were thrilled to be even nominated for this award, let alone win it,” said Matt Rostron, Managing Director of London Youth Rowing. “It’s really amazing to be recognised for the work we are trying to do by organisations like London Youth Games and Sport England.

“We have tried to develop Indoor Rowing into a sport in its own right and London Youth Games has helped us to do that. The range and scope of London Youth Games means that we can engage with a huge audience more easily and quickly. Over the years the response has been amazing and London Youth Rowing has grown year on year because of it.”
