Agony for Aggar in Chungju but rep to come

Beijing 2008 Paralympic Champion Tom Aggar would today have liked to repeat his Eton Dorney world cup win from earlier this year over Alexey Chuvashev of Russia.

Instead he came off second best – but only just – in an exciting heat from which only one rower could qualify into the final of the World Championships, taking place in Chungju, South Korea.

Chuvashev led early and looked strong but Aggar settled into a rhythm and gradually hauled himself back into contention. With 200m to go the Londoner had the edge over the rival who also beat him at the London Paralympic Games.

Chuvashev responded with enough speed to overhaul Aggar yards from the line. Aggar, the defending World Champion, now faces a repechage on Tuesday. In the other heat Australia’s Erik Horrie, set the event alight when he came close to posting a world best time in recording 4:48.20 into a slight headwind.

The British mixed para-rowing coxed four starts its campaign tomorrow with a race for lanes. From this the six crews entered will be seeded into lanes for Thursday’s finals.
