Aggar and Para Rowing Four into finals at Worlds

Tom Aggar, the reigning World Champion, moved through to the finals of the World Championships in Korea this afternoon by way of a second place in his repechage of the arms-shoulders single scull.

Korea’s Park Jun Ha went out quickly and was pursued by Londoner Aggar until the Briton knew that he was safe in taking the second qualifying slot , crossing the line in 5:14.43.

“The depth of the field in para-rowing events has grown and that’s showing here. There are now four or five strong contenders for the podium in this event”, said GB Rowing Team Paralympic coordinator Louise Kingsley.

Later the mixed, coxed para-rowing four with a new line-up since winning gold in London, had their preliminary race and laid down a significant marker.

Italy started this race quickly but were soon caught by the British quartet of Aylesbury’s Monica Relph, Naomi Riches from Marlow, Peterborough’s James Fox, Henley’s Oliver Hester and cox Oliver James who went on to win in 3:25.55.

EARLIER IN THE DAY James Foad and Oli Cook who were the last boat to be named in the British team for Chungju, Korea, and the World Championships here, celebrated reaching the semi-finals after taking a second place in the men’s pair repechage.

By contrast, there was disappointment for the women’s quadruple scull of Lucinda Gooderham, Monica Relph, Kristina Stiller and Rosamund Bradbury as they came home fourth in their repechage and will now contest a B Final.

The men’s pair went off with the pace of pre-race favourites, Poland, and held on to second by a few feet when the Australians came back on them at the finish. Their gutsy row puts them in the world’s top 12 after just a few weeks together as a combination.

Cook, from Windsor, is a newcomer to the squad this year whilst Southampton’s Foad won Olympic bronze in the men’s eight a year ago before under-going surgery. At one stage he thought he would have to sit out this season altogether.

“We had a good first 1km today”, said Foad. “I looked across at that point and wanted to clear the race up early and we put in a push and then we probably tied up bit more than expected at the end”..

For Bradbury, Stiller, Relph and Gooderham the pace set by the USA and Poland in their repechage proved a bit too hot to handle. At 500m they were still in contention but as the race unravelled it was clear that they would miss out.

So it was a bitter sweet day for the Relph sisters with Pamela making the final and Monica missing out.
