Sad news of the death of John Veats

British Rowing has learned with great sadness of the death of John Veats, Honorary Life Vice President of British Rowing, who died peacefully at home on Sunday 14th July.

John was a dedicated volunteer and officer of British Rowing (formerly the ARA) for over 33 years, serving in many roles including Chairman (1981–1989) and Honorary Treasurer, and receiving the prestigious Medal of Honour for services to the sport in 1987.

He was a member of the Organising Committee of the World Rowing Championships in 1975, and Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee of the World Rowing Championships in 1986.

As well as being a life member of British Rowing, a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta and a FISA Umpire and delegate, John also made a significant contribution to the wider family of sport through the Sport and Recreation Alliance (formerly CCPR).

He served the Alliance as Chairman of the Water Recreation Division, and was elected as an honorary member – receiving the organisation’s coveted Emeritus Award, for sustained service to sport and recreation, in 2004.

“John was a talented schoolboy rower with a lifelong passion for rowing and supporting those working in the sport,” said British Rowing Chairman Annamarie Phelps. “He was always generous with his time and knowledge and will be greatly missed.”
