GB Rowing Team junior men’s eight through to World final

The GB Rowing Team’s junior men’s eight today reached the final of the World  Rowing Junior Championships after an emphatic win over the USA while the  junior men’s quadruple scull also won their heat to reach the semi-finals.

On the second day of racing at Eton-Dorney, the Olympic venue, the men’s four also moved safely from their repechage into the semi-finals as the rain poured down on a Championships which is also a test-run for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic organises.

A full grandstand cheered as the eight of Rob Wickstead, Alexander Lloyd, John  Carter, Jamie Copus, Luke Briggs, Edward Munno, Frederic Vystavel, Cameron MacRitchie and cox Ed Bosson were almost five seconds clear of the USA who were pipped on the line to second by Spain in a photo finish.

“The eight had a very strong first race, has shown it’s got some pace and perhaps set a standard for the final on Saturday,” said GB Team Manager, John Layng.

Marcus Bowyer, who is part of the GB Rowing Team’s World Class Start programme sponsored by Siemens, turned 18 on Tuesday and celebrated with Jack Beaumont Luke Moon and Lewis Sloan in the quad after putting in a terrific push to hold off Germany for the sole automatic qualifying spot in 6:28.38, with clear water  back to Canada in third.

“The boys quad have laid down a serious marker for the other crews in the event,”  said Layng.

Seven of the eight GB crews were in action in front of the crowds today and the junior women’s four also gave the British fans something to cheer in the first race, rowing through Australia in the final 500m of the 2012 Olympic course to finish second behind New Zealand.

Elizabeth Horne, Nicole Lamb, Anastasia Chitty and Amber de Vere kept pace just behind the two Antipodean crews before making their move but will still have to qualify for the final via the repechage.

The men’s coxed four of Charlie Shaw, Rufus Eadie, Felix Newman, stroke Alex Wilding and cox Ed Bosson were third after a close race  but will race a repechage having finished behind Italy and Australia.

Also due another race to qualify for the semi-finals are Ed Grisedale and Joseph Guppy who pulled up through their field in the double scull from sixth to finish third, just six-tenths of a second behind Holland with both crews trailing winners  Slovenia in the only automatic qualification place.

Oleg Isaev and Andrew Brown finished fifth in the junior men’s pair and race again tomorrow morning to try and progress.

“Some of the crews have found out more about themselves than they knew beforehand and have a better idea of what to do tomorrow”, said Layng.

“One of the things about juniors is it is the first time these guys will have raced together at this level. It lets them know what they need to do and how much they can push themselves.”

Friday’s racing at the WRJC runs from 10am to 12:45pm.
