GB Rowing Team’s Grainger and Watkins draw attention in Munich
Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, a new combination this year for the GB Rowing Team in the women’s double scull, drew significant attention this morning when winning their world cup heat in Munich.
The Scottish-Staffordshire duo flew off the start in a strong tailwind, took a considerable lead and enjoyed the luxury of easing down in the second half to become the first GB boat here to qualify for a final on Sunday. Both will race in the women’s quadruple scull later today.
“They are very quick”, said a clearly pleased GB Rowing Team Performance Director David Tanner.
Olympic men’s four champions Peter Reed from Gloucesterdshire and Andrew Triggs Hodge of Yorkshire are also safely through to a semi-final tomorrow as winners of their men’s pair heat. So, too, are Cameron Nichol and Tom Burton who performed strongly to take second place in an earlier heat behind Reed and Hodge’s main rivals and the world champions from New Zealand.
Marcus Bateman and Matt Wells, winners of gold in Bled, Slovenia, last month paced their heat well to win in 6:22.18 and move into the semi-finals. The Ukraine were second and Norway third.
Great Britain men’s four beat off three German crews to win their heat. Stroked by Matt Langridge, the reigning world champions, were third at 500m, took the lead at halfway and went onto win in 5:55.66.
Later today Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase, Olympic champions in the lighweight men’s double scull will race for the first time since Beijing and Britain.
