Stiff Test in Poland
GB Rowing re-enters the world cup fray in Poznan, Poland, from Thursday-Saturday (15-17 June) after a solid start to the World Cup season in Munich three weeks ago.
19 crews (61 rowers) will represent Great Britain at the regatta which features New Zealand, quadruple gold medallists at last year’s World Championships, for the first time this season.
Britain’s flagship female crew, backed by Camelot and stroked by Katherine Grainger, won in Munich but will face 2005 world silver medallists, Germany, in Poland
The Camelot-sponsored men’s four of Steve Williams, Peter Reed, Alex Partridge and Andy Hodge also won in Munich, where they were pushed home by the Netherlands and Germany – the latter being in the draw in Poznan.
Meanwhile Alan Campbell, who burst onto the scene on his debut by winning in Munich, will line up against his sometime training partner and world champion Mahe Drysdale, of New Zealand, in the men’s single scull.
Unusually, Britain has entered two men’s eights in Poland.
The first features the same personnel that were finalists in Munich but in a reshuffled pack which sees Kieran West, Olympic gold medallist in 2000, take up the stroke seat.
The second bloods some talented under-23s like Sam Townsend and includes Marcus Bateman – both are graduates of the ARA’s Lottery-funded World Class Start programme.
Mark Hunter will contest the lightweight men’s double scull in Poznan with James Lindsay-Fynn. After sustaining a knee injury earlier this year, Hunter has gradually worked his way back into this Olympic-class boat.
In the equivalent women’s boat Helen Casey and Jane Hall will be looking to build on their seventh place in Munich.
Finally, in the women’s eight Alison Knowles comes into the crew to replace Jess Eddie.
