Double Withdrawn from Lucerne

Britain withdrew its men’s double scull from this afternoon’s repechages here in Lucerne at the BearingPoint World Cup Finals because Alex Gregory had not recovered sufficiently, from the asthma attack he suffered during the morning’s heats, to race again.

“I’m sure he will be fully fit to race with Colin Smith in the World U23 Championships next month but we felt it wasn’t wise to race him here again this afternoon”, said British Team Manager, David Tanner, of the talented young rower who has come through from the Sport England-funded World Class Start programme which identifies new talent.

There was further British disappointment in the day’s penultimate race when Helen Casey and Jennifer Goldsack failed by just under five tenths of a second to qualify for tomorrow’s semi-finals of the lightweight women’s double scull.  They were third in a time of 7:22.15.  Greece won the repechage with Italy in second.
