British Crews Compete in Another Historic Location

A British rowing team, flush with its successes at last weekend’s Rowing World Cup at Eton, travels to another historic location to compete in an international regatta this weekend.

Four British crews – two eights and two quadruple sculls – will join entries from France,
Germany, Poland and Australia at an invitational international event to be held on Louis
XIV’s boating lake at the Palace of Versailles, France on Saturday (4 June).

Racing at the Versailles International will be over a 1500m rather than 2000m course
because of the length of the lake.

"This will certainly be an interesting regatta in wonderful surroundings",
said GB Team Manager David Tanner. "The standard is also going to be high".

Great Britain’s eights for Versailles are broadly unchanged from the line-ups
which each won World Cup bronzes. In the women’s eight Carla Ashford replaces Anna
Bebington who has exams. The men’s eight has a new cox, Seb Pearce, part of this
season’s on-going trials for this seat.

The men’s quadruple scull features Matthew Wells as a replacement for Alex Gregory.
Wells, who has come back into the sport after a back injury, raced in the single
at the World Cup last weekend.

The women’s quadruple scull is unchanged from the line-up which took the world
cup title last weekend.

Britain won two golds and four bronzes at the BearingPoint Rowing World Cup
at Eton – the first time that rowing of this level has been seen in
Britain for almost 20 years.

The same venue will be used for the World Championships in August of next
year and, should London be successful in its bid to stage the Olympic Games, will
host rowing and canoeing events in 2012.
