Walbrook Rowing Club, Teddington – Director of Rowing
Walbrook Rowing Club is seeking to appoint a Director of Rowing to further develop their strong foundation. The Director of Rowing will primarily develop the successful junior programme and also support the adult membership of the club.
Key Duties
- Leading the Junior Programme (70% Focus):
- Oversee coaching of junior crews, including hands-on coaching during key times (Saturday, Sunday daytime, weekday evenings after school, and daytime holiday sessions).
- Organise the development and recruitment of new junior members, catering to both those new to the sport and experienced athletes, and lead summer Learn to Row courses.
- Manage, coordinate, guide, and mentor the team of junior coaches, liaising with other club coaches, the junior co-ordinator, existing volunteer coaches, junior parents, and the club committee.
- Prepare and organise comprehensive land and water programmes for juniors, ensuring they are appropriate to athlete needs for high performance and potential achievement.
- Maintain suitable records for athlete selection and justification in crews.
- Prepare and send out event information for parents.
- Organise training camp(s) for junior athletes.
- Attend coaches meetings (at least every half term, usually monthly).
- Work within the allocated budget for other junior coaches’ hours.
- Boathouse and Administrative Responsibilities (20% Focus):
Walbrook is a community of proactive members and as the director of rowing you will be supported by the captain and member volunteers at the club to carry out the following:
- Carry out a boathouse managerial role, including general maintenance to boats and equipment.
- Manage equipment inventory and repairs (in-house or professionally repaired).
- Ensure launches and trailers are in good working order, arranging services and repairs.
- Ensure boats meet safety requirements (e.g., heel restraints).
- Assist with boat allocation in conjunction with the club Captain.
- Handle and effect insurance claims in liaison with the Committee and volunteers.
- Prepare and submit lists of crews for events on BROE in good time, liaising with the adult entry secretary for payment.
- Liaise weekly with the Club Captain and submit a report to each Committee meeting.
- Undertake any other reasonable duty associated with the role as agreed.
- Supporting Masters Crews (10% Focus):
- Coach master’s crews for 4 hours per week (flexible across the week)
- Advise on suitable programmes for Masters crews preparing for higher-level competition.
Essential and Desirable Criteria
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
- Rowing Coaching qualification.
- Safeguarding and Child Welfare Qualification. (or have applied for one in time to start the role)
- Excellent planning, time management, communication, and administrative skills to manage a large membership with varying abilities and aspirations.
- Ability to remain up-to-date through attendance at BR Coaching Seminars (number and type by negotiation).
- Desirable Qualifications & Skills:
- British Rowing Level 2 Coaching qualification or higher.
- First Aid certificate.
- RYA Level 2 Powerboating qualification.
- A trailer and/or minibus driver’s licence.

Our Masters’ crews have also achieved significant successes at British Masters, Henley Masters, and FISA World Masters. Salary: Dependant on Experience
Type: This is a full-time role, requiring 40 hours per week, with an anticipated focus of 70% on junior activities, 20% on Boathouse/admin duties, and 10% on Masters.
