About Us

‘Cantabs’ is a successful and thriving club in Cambridge, catering for all levels of rowing and sculling from beginner to elite, and from juniors to masters. With approximately 300 members we have a thriving social calendar alongside our rowing activities. Our optimally-located boathouse includes an ergo room and weights gym and we maintain an impressive fleet of over 90 boats of all types. We compete locally, nationally and internationally with regular representation at the Tideway Heads, the Henley Regattas, JIRR, National Schools, British Masters and World Masters Regattas.

Our senior squads are ambitious, competitive and committed to training throughout the year. They are eager to continue to compete both locally and nationally, having previously been successful at all levels of competition. Notably, our Women’s squad won the Club Eights event at Henley Women’s Regatta in 2017 and won the Provincial Pennant at WEHoRR in 2017, 2022 and 2024. Both squads regularly pre-qualify for club level events at Henley Royal Regatta. We would welcome a coach to help us continue to excel and compete at a high level.

About the Roles

Each Head Coach will have overall responsibility for their respective squad and will collaborate closely with the squad captain to:

  • Develop and implement a structured season plan for the squad for the season, including: training sessions, races and training camps.
  • Design and deliver a training program for the season.
    Lead coaching sessions, primarily on the water, with additional coaching on ergos and strength & conditioning as required.
  • Select racing crews using clear and transparent selection criteria.
  • Lead a team of volunteer coaches for the senior squad.
  • Work with volunteer coaches throughout the club to support assist in their development.
    Collaborate closely with the other senior squad Head Coach to coordinate training and other activities.

Who We Are Looking For

We seek passionate, dynamic coaches who can inspire athletes For each position, we are looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring person who can continue and build upon the success of our current programs. The ideal candidates will have:

  • A self-motivated, driven approach, eager to make their mark on the program and foster a positive training environment.
  • A sound technical and physiological knowledge of the rowing stroke and the ability to coach this in a clear and understandable manner to athletes with a range of experience levels.
  • An understanding of how to coach crews for all types of racing, including all the major domestic competitions.
  • Knowledge and experience of boat rigging will be an advantage.
  • Self-employed status with HMRC (or willingness to register).
  • British Rowing Coaching membership.
Preferred qualifications (highly desirable, but not essential for the right candidate):
  • British Rowing Coaching Level 2 or higher.
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 (or equivalent).
  • Full UK driving licence and experience towing boat trailers.
  • S&C coaching qualification.

Commitment & Compensation

The role is offered on a self-employed basis and will typically involve 5-6 coaching sessions per week (approximately 10-12 hours), at a rate based on previous experience. Sessions will typically take place at weekends, weekday early mornings and weekday evenings. The roles would be well-suited to individuals seeking to supplement their main income while pursuing their passion for rowing.
