Dan started rowing at the age of 14 after swapping sports from tennis due to injuries.

His doubles partners grandad had consistently told him that he should swap a racquet for an oar so during a period of prolonged injury he decided to give it a try. He started rowing at Tyne United Rowing Club where he was coached by Ciro Prisco who at that time was the assistant coach at Newcastle University, somewhat cementing his future goals. After his A-levels, Dan predictably joined Newcastle University to study Ancient History where rowing became a lot more serious and the prospect of representing his country grew in his mind. After competing at the U23 European.Championships in his second year, he set his sights firmly on a World Championship vest.

Following COVID and his graduation from university, Dan chose to pursue rowing at Leander, a decision that shaped his rowing career. In the next 4 years he competed for Great Britain several times both at U23 and senior level, further fuelling his desire to compete for his country on the biggest stage.
