Rowing Professional and Boat Club Administrator – St Paul’s School
St Paul’s School is seeking a motivated Rowing Professional & Boat Club Administrator to support their high-performing rowing programme
This varied role combines leading coaching for a year group with the day-to-day administration of the Boat Club, including organising training, races and logistics. You will work closely with the Director of Rowing, contribute to a collaborative coaching environment, and help ensure the safe and effective running of all activities.
About the Role
The aim of St Paul’s Boat Club is to provide a safe, supportive and high quality competitive rowing programme for the pupils of St Paul’s School. The role of the Rowing Professional and Boat Club Administrator is to support this aim in accordance with the School’s and Boat Club’s policies under the line management of the Director of Rowing and the direction of the President of the Boat Club.
The Rowing Professional and Boat Club Administrator will act as lead coach for a year group and take responsibility for the administration of the Boat Club including primary responsibility for all safety aspects of the Boat Club’s activities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Lead Coaching
- Lead coach a year group as determined by the Director of Rowing and the President of the Boat Club.
- In discussion with the Director of Rowing create a suitable training program, lead training sessions and provide effective leadership and assistance to the other coaches working with that year group, including supporting the involvement of academic staff in the coaching and line management of part-time coaches assigned to that year group.
- To organise events and training camps for the year group as necessary.
- To communicate effectively and in a timely manner about plans and issues with staff, pupils, and parents as necessary, including acting as first point of contact for parents from the year group.
- To liaise with the school’s pastoral team on any matters, including matters relating to selection, that have or could have a safeguarding implication for pupils.
- To organise and oversee the rigging and preparation of the boats needed by the year group and its coaching team.
- To ensure that Registers are taken for relevant year group activities.
Coaching
- In addition to coaching a crew within the year group being led, to assist in the coaching of the other year groups, including during all games halves.
- Where the Rowing Professional is acting as lead coach for the J14 year group, the Rowing Professional will be expected to:
- Take responsibility for managing the 4th form Monday activities, 4th form taster events and SPJ summer term program.
- To coach non-J14 crews during the autumn term including on all games halves and supporting the J15 Lead Coach in running additional sessions for pupils not on the games half.
Summer Camps
- Alongside the other Rowing Professionals, to plan, staff and run two week-long summer camps for incoming 4th formers. This work will not be eligible for any additional or overtime payments.
Administration
- Carry out the necessary administration of the club, including British Rowing registrations and affiliations, race entries, logistics for training and racing, organising transport for off-site events and working with the Director of Rowing to manage the club’s finances (including Book Room charges).
- Working with the Director of Rowing or relevant coach to make and manage the arrangements for trips and training camps.
- Entering Races and results into SOCS sport and training sessions into SOCS co-curricular.
Transportation
- To contribute to the Boat Club’s transportation requirements including by driving passenger-carrying vehicles and towing trailers as directed by the Director of rowing.
- In the event that a candidate does not have a full UK driving licence that permits driving the necessary vehicles, the candidate will be expected to undertake training to achieve the necessary qualifications and competence.
Maintenance
- Under the direction of the Director of Rowing, or a person authorised by the Director of Rowing, working with the Boatman to maintain the Boat Club’s fleet in a safe, clean, tidy and ready state.
- This will include but is not limited to: carrying out regular safety checks on equipment; being available to aid the Boatman in moving boats and equipment, completing minor repairs to boats and equipment; communicating problems to the Boatman and other coaches; ensuring the correct boats are rigged and prepared for use.
Managing Facilities
- Under the direction of, and working with, the Boathouse Manager to contribute to maintaining the Boathouse and its facilities in a safe, clean, tidy and ready state. This could include but is not limited to the following areas: the gym; the storage of equipment and the boat bays; the fuel supply for launches; the club’s electronics; safety equipment including launches, safety kits, megaphones, life jackets and first aid kits; communicating problems to the Boatman and other coaches; and ensuring all equipment needed by other coaches or pupils is available and prepared for sessions.
Health and Safety
- To take leadership of the Boat Club’s Health and Safety approach and to act as the Boat Club’s Water Safety Officer. This will include maintaining and updating the Boat Club’s Health and Safety documentation and communicating safety issues to all members of the Boat Club.
Compliance
- To be familiar with and to follow all Boat Club policies and all school policies where they are relevant to the role.
Other duties
- Â To fulfil other duties necessary for the running of the Boat Club as directed by the President of the Boat Club and the Director of Rowing.
Safeguarding
- All staff have a responsibility and duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils. Staff must be aware of the systems within the School which support safeguarding and must act in accordance with the School’s Safeguarding & Child Protection policy and Code of Conduct. Staff will receive appropriate child protection training which is regularly updated.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- A proven track record as a coach for junior athletes.
- Experience coaching junior rowers
- Experience taking crews to major national regattas e.g. National Schools’ Regatta
- Knowledge of the British Rowing incident reporting system
- Knowledge of the British Rowing Online Entry system
- Desire to part of a high performing rowing environment.
- The ability to assess risk as related to rowing activities and act accordingly
- The ability to work well in a team, build trust and openness
- A flexible approach to the working week, this job involves work during weekends and school holidays
- The ability to safely operate a motor launch on the Tideway
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Respectful of staff, pupils and parents

Desirable:
- Â British Rowing Level 2 coaching certificate or equivalent
- RYA Level 2 powerboat licence (this can be gained on the job if necessary)
- Knowledge and experience of Tideway rowing
- Ability to Drive a minibus
- Experience towing a trailer
Holidays
25 days plus 8 Bank Holidays per annumn. Annual leave should usually be taken during School holidays (term dates can be found here).
NB: The School normally closes for a period over Christmas, the dates of which are agreed by the Executive Team every year. This closure period may result in additional non-working days; however, this is non-contractual and does not affect annual leave entitlement.
