Dr. Richard Budgett named IOC medical director

Olympic gold medallist Dr. Richard Budgett OBE has been named as the International Olympic Committee’s new medical and scientific director.

Dr. Budgett – who is also British Rowing’s Honorary Medical Adviser and Chief Medical Officer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – won Olympic gold alongside Sir Steve Redgrave in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

He will take up his new position at the IOC in October, after overseeing medical and anti-doping services at London 2012.

Between 2005 and 2008, Dr. Budgett was team doctor to the GB Rowing Team – helping our international rowers achieve unparalleled success at Beijing 2008.

He attended the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics as the doctor for the British Bobsleigh Team, and the 1998, 2002, and 2006 Games as Chief Medical Officer to the British Team.

He also led the Team GB HQ Medical Team at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Summer Olympic Games, and London 2012 will be his 12th Olympic Games.
