The National Schools Rowing Regatta 2010 is taking place at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham this weekend
Since 1973 the best of the Nation’s junior athletes from the biggest schools to the smallest clubs have come here to contest the full range of events in the sport of rowing. Events are open to ages from Under 14 (J14) up to Under 18 (J18 Championship) classes. Last year there was a record entry of 3973 competitors from 153 clubs and schools, both boys and girls.
The Regatta offers exciting racing over 1000m for J14 and J15 crews on Friday 28th May and over the full 2000m course for J16, J17 and J18 Championship crews on Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th May.
Team supporters and spectators are generally able to follow the action from the moving vantage point of double-decker buses along the south side of the rowing course.
Event types in each age-group, both sexes, feature sculling in singles, doubles and quads. In addition to sculling events older athletes, (J16 to Championship J18) will also be able to compete in sweep-oar rowing (pairs, fours and eights).
Entries in some events can reach up to 40 hopeful crews, so early races each day will be processional time trials to reduce the field to 12 or 18 crews, who will then contest two or three semi-finals respectively to qualify for the finals.
Additions and alterations for the 2010 Regatta include:
- All events listed as "School..." in past years have not been exclusively for schools for many years and have now been renamed to reflect this. For example "School First Eights" is now "First Eights" and "School Coxed Fours" (SCH4+) is "First Coxed Fours" (1st4+)
- One new event has been introduced this year: J16G2- Junior 16 Girls' Coxless Pairs (on Sunday)
