Coaching with Care: Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing

This online learning explores how coaches can support mental health and wellbeing in sport and physical activity settings

It introduces key mental health concepts, helps coaches recognise possible signs of poor mental health, and provides practical strategies for responding with empathy and care.

Developed in partnership with the charity, Mind it also covers professional boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding, self-care, and the role of inclusive coaching practice in supporting wellbeing. Throughout the course, coaches are encouraged to reflect on how they can create person-centred environments that support both participants and themselves.

This course will help you build the knowledge, skills and confidence to:

  • Recognise common signs that someone may be struggling
  • Respond supportively in the moment
  • Understand your professional boundaries
  • Know when and how to refer or escalate concerns
  • Support your own wellbeing as a coach
  • Create inclusive coaching environments that promote mental health and wellbeing

Who can complete the training?

This course is for coaches working in sport and physical activity settings who want to better support the mental health and wellbeing of the people they coach. It is also a pre-requisite for the Coach qualification.

It is designed for coaches who want to create safe, inclusive and supportive environments, recognise when someone may be struggling, and respond appropriately within the boundaries of their role.

How is the training structured?

The training is a free piece of online learning that you can complete in your own time, and at a pace that suits you. It will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

How do I add the training to my British Rowing Profile?

On completion of the module you will receive a certificate which you need to add to the ‘credential’ section of your British Rowing profile using the instructions below:

  • Log in to the British Rowing membership portal
  • Click on ‘My Profile’
  • Click the ‘Credentials’ tab and select ‘Add Credentials’
  • Select ‘Coaching with Care’ from the menu
  • Enter the start date, and upload your electronic certificate
  • Select ‘Save’ in the right corner
