Coach

Launching in September 2026, our new Coach qualification supports coaches to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours to coach independently

It is for coaches who are working towards leading a squad, programme or crew through the course of a season.

Building on Assistant Coach Training modules, the Coach modules are:

Standards that Stick – An independent piece of online learning which helps coaches to understand their professional responsibilities aligned with policy and procedures.

Good to Great – An independent piece of online learning which underpins reflective practice, and continuous improvement in the role.

Moments that Matter – An online classroom which supports coaches to understand how to keep the development of the coach-athlete relationship at the heart of session delivery.

Define, Design, and Deliver – A full in-person day which develops coaches to understand how to approach the flow of a rowing season, and design suitable sessions to work towards agreed goals. The day also covers:

  • Basic rigging
  • The British Rowing Technical Model
  • Supporting rowers through illness or injury
  • How to improve your coaching eye
  • Ongoing Duty to Care

On completion of all modules, you will be asked to complete a number of online tasks, and will be paired with an assessor to arrange a club visit to see your coaching in action.

On successful completion of your assessment tasks, you will be awarded your Coach qualification.

Preparing for launch!

Our re-designed qualifications mean you will never have to repeat any learning, and that is why everyone will start with the Assistant Coach Training. To prepare for the launch of our new Coach qualification, you will need to book onto the Assistant Coach modules as these are a pre-requisite to signing up.

You will also need to complete the following pieces of training:

  • Safety Basics
  • Cold Water and Hypothermia
  • Capsize Drill for Coaches
  • UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children
  • Basic First Aid (or evidence you are booked onto a course)*

*The minimum requirement for this is that it should include practical CPR.
