Campbell shrugs off accident to win GB Rowing Team Winter Assessment

Alan Campbell shrugged off a recent cycling accident in training to win the GB Rowing Team Winter Assessment single scull final at Eton-Dorney today.

The accident was severe enough to put the Coleraine man in hospital for a few days but he showed his mettle in holding off Beijing Olympic double scull medallist Matthew Wells in the final 300m of the race today with Matthew Langridge in third.

Battle lines drawn for finals at Olympic Venue

Battle lines have been drawn for tomorrow's men's pair final at the GB Rowing Team Winter Assessment with the squad's top two pairs both winning semi-finals this afternoon.

Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed, reigning Olympic champion in the men's four, looked contained in leading their semi-final from the 500m marker onwards ahead of the duo's Beijing 2008 crew-mate Tom James and his Molesey Club partner, Tom Solesbury.

Campbell back from cycling spill to race at winter assessment this weekend

Alan Campbell, who took a superb World Championships single scull silver in August 2009, will race the GB Rowing Team Winter Assessment at Eton-Dorney this weekend after all.

Campbell has battled back from injury sustained during a training spill from his bike in South Africa last month. The single scull event will also feature 2008 Olympic double scull bronze medallist Matt Wells and three from the 2009 men's quadruple scull - Marcus Bateman, Charles Cousins and Sam Townsend.

Partridge is named as Olympic Athlete of the Year

Alex Partridge has been named as rowing's "Olympic Athlete of the Year" for his achievements in 2009 as part of the world champion men's four - his third world title in this boat category since 2005.

Partridge, who celebrated his 29th birthday earlier this week and is pictured above celebrating in the bow seat, received his British Olympic Association award during tonight's GB Rowing Team Dinner in London.

The GB Rowing Team's Olympic and world medallist, Anna Watkins, yesterday helped Siemens plc and The Stroke Association’s get their third annual Stroke for Stroke week underway by rowing the first 1km of this year's campaign at Siemens' Headquarters in Frimley, Surrrey.

GB Rowing Team on Duty to Promote National Lottery

GB Rowing Team members Andrew Triggs Hodge, Pete Reed, Tom James, Zac Purchase, Mark Hunter and their erstwhile colleague Steve Williams were on duty before the weekend in support of The National Lottery.

Their presence helped promote a scheme to recognise the achievements of Britain's Olympians and Paralympians since 1948 and the six Beijing gold medallists had their hands and feet cast to mark the occasion.

Prospective Paralympic rowers are being reminded that they have until Monday 11th January to sign up to see if they have what it takes to represent Great Britain.

With less than three years to go to the 2012 Paralympic Games, rowing will host one of the UK Talent Team’s Talent 2012: Paralympic Potential assessment days this month. This is the final opportunity to try out for ParalympicsGB before 2012 and would-be Parlaympians can sign up to take part at www.uksport.gov.uk/talent

New Talent Search Begins

GB Rowing Team coaches, led by Start Manager Steve Gunn, will be working hard in January as over 1000 Olympic hopefuls are put through their paces at three centres as part of UK Sport’s Tall and Talented programme.

Gateshead and Stirling (subject to travelling conditions) as well as Bath, Loughborough and Brunel Universities will host testing for the programme which was launched by Olympic medallists Andrew Triggs Hodge and Katherine Grainger last Autumn.
