Head Rowing Coach – Exeter College Boat Club, Oxford

Exeter College Boat Club (ECBC) are looking for an experienced and committed Head Coach who can stay with the club for several years.

ECBC is one of the oldest clubs in the country, being over 200 years old. Both the M1 and W1 sit near the top of Div II for Torpids and Eights, and the boat club are looking to bring them into the first division this year. This Summer Eights, the M1 achieved highest blades on the river for the second year running, and our W1 reached the highest they have ever placed on the river.

This boat club is well-equipped, training both on the Isis and at Godstow, and consistently train four to five boats throughout the year, with an aim of fielding eight crews at VIIIs. An applicant should be comfortable creating different training plans to suit a wide range of abilities to develop depth in the club. The top priority is maintaining a fun and inclusive atmosphere whilst pushing our top athletes to the highest levels. It is vital that any applicant can keep a balance between healthy competition and inclusivity. Additionally, we are looking for someone who can provide a consistent and clear training plan to support the long-term success of the club.

The season is based around the intercollegiate bumps races in March and June, with training largely being based around preparation for this. There will also be opportunities to compete in external regattas and head races throughout the year, such as HORR, HRR, Bedford Amateur Regatta, and Reading Amateur Regatta.

Responsibilities
  • Create a long-term plan for training throughout the year.
  • Prescribe both water and land training sessions.
  • Coach both water and land sessions, mainly for 1st boats.
  • Liaise with other coaches to ensure training is being delivered to all
    crews effectively.
  • Provide clear technical feedback, on both a crew and individual
    level, to rowers and coxes.
  • Work with captains to set crews for racing, especially bumps racing,
    and provide race plans.
Essential Criteria
  • Morning, evening, and weekend availability to coach.
  • Significant coaching experience.
  • Ability to give focussed technical feedback to rowers and
    coxes.
  • Positive, committed, and enthusiastic.
Desirable Criteria
  • Familiarity with Oxford college rowing, particularly bumps.
  • Previous experience coaching novice rowers.
  • Understanding of / experience coxing
  • Good understanding of boat rigging and equipment.
  • RYA2 powerboat licence.
  • Availability for training camps in January and April.
