Globe Rowing Club – Squad Coach

Globe Rowing Club is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Coach to take ownership of our thriving club squad. This role is responsible for the technical development, crew allocation, and race preparation of a dedicated group of rowers with a range of experience, including a strong contingent of successful Masters athletes, all of whom compete at regional and national level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coaching Delivery: Plan, organize, and deliver the main coached session on Saturday mornings, with opportunity to immediately, or down the line lead additional sessions (Sunday mornings for instance available from the outset).
  • Technical Development: Provide technical coaching in both sculling and sweep, specifically tailored to the needs of experienced rowers to maintain and improve efficiency as well as best prepare for competition.
  • Competition Management: Collaborate with the captain and other coaches to manage the squad’s racing calendar (Heads and Regattas), crew selection, and provide on-the-day race support and post-race feedback.
  • Safety & Logistics: Ensure all water and land sessions are run safely and in accordance with British Rowing guidelines and Club safety protocols, especially when operating on the tidal Thames from Greenwich.
  • Club Collaboration: Work closely with the other squad coaches (3 other leads, plus 9 other volunteer coaches) to ensure a cohesive and supportive training environment across the club’s structure.
  • Feedback and support Club growth: Collaborate with coaches on training program development, feeding back ideas and challenges as well as supporting captain and committee on wider club development.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Coaching Experience: Experience of coaching rowing is preferred but we will consider individuals who have rowing experience and coached or served in a similar capacity in other sports (essential).
  • Communication: and an ability to communicate effectively with experienced athletes, managing expectations for commitment and performance (essential).
  • Technical Knowledge: Excellent knowledge and practical ability to coach both sculling and sweep rowing (essential).
  • Organisational: Exceptional organisation and planning skills with an awareness of the British Rowing calendar (essential).
  • Coaching Qualification: British Rowing Level 2 Coaching Award (or equivalent international qualification) is highly desirable however we will support to acquire if not yet holding .
  • River knowledge: The Lower Thames is very different to the rest of the river, Thames experience or commitment to quickly learn the PLA code for the Lower Thames (essential).
  • Launch/powerboat Certification: A valid RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate (desirable) or a willingness to obtain one quickly upon appointment.

As highlighted above, we now have a large team of coaches who, though assigned to a squad, work together to deliver a thriving club for rowers of all ages and levels of skill.

This is a paid role but we welcome volunteers to this position and/or to help elsewhere.

The minimum expectation is 3-4 hours on a Saturday morning (7:30-10:30 with some flexibility subject to tides and requirements) and attendance at key competitions.
We highly welcome people who have more availability including Sunday mornings and midweek morning/evenings – this can be discussed during an interview should you be interested.

The Squad Profile (named ‘Competition’ within the club):

The Competition Squad is our largest squad, it consists of experienced rowers who are committed to racing but who cannot, or choose not to, commit to a major (12+ hours a week) program, although some come close. They follow a provided training program (weights and ergs) and primarily row out of Greenwich and also utilise the 2k course at the Royal Albert Docks where additional boats are stored.
The squad will target competitive local regattas as well as national events and we’re eager to explore international ones too; such as World Masters.
Incoming rowers arrive either experienced from the outside or through our learn to row programme and development squad. The squad coach also works closely with our lead and supporting Development coaches to assist with preparation and transition to this squad.

Salary: Hourly pay which will be subject to experience and qualifications

Type: Part time (3-4 hours Saturday morning, can extend to Sunday mornings and midweek mornings/evenings)
