Assistant Rowing Coach – Kew House School

Kew House School seeks a qualified and aspiring rowing coach to assist all squad sessions and develop the base of junior student athletes, with further scope to focus on the new J16 Squad.

The successful candidate must be available to work Saturdays and occasional Sundays, and in holidays, to coach and accompany students to sporting fixtures. Up to 9+ sessions a week can be expected in term time. Weekday session times fall between 12.45-6.30pm with Saturday training typically seniors in the morning, and juniors in the afternoon. Training times and venues will differ during school holidays.

This position at Kew House School Boat Club provides an exciting opportunity for an aspiring coach to work within a close team of a rapidly developing, competitive, and ambitious school boat club. KHSBC races and competes successfully at regional, national and international events, with athletes competing at the last two Junior World Championships, achieving a silver and a gold respectively in the JW8+.

All staff are expected to have a clear understanding of the aims, objectives, and ethos of the school, and an awareness of its role in the community. It is essential that the academic and pastoral frameworks in the school are seen as inter-related.

The successful candidate will:
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of junior school rowing
  • Promote a love of rowing for every pupil by engaging in KHSBC sessions, regattas, and events
  • Coach training sessions when required across J14 – J18 age groups
  • Primarily focus on the coaching and development of J14-J16 age groups
  • Secondary focus to inspire with ‘taster session’ coaching of J13 age groups
  • Work supportively alongside Boathouse Manager, other Lead coaches and Head of Rowing
  • Have excellent organisation and communication skills to work with students, staff, and parents
  • Demonstrate patience and rapport with young individuals, and the ability to inspire and engage
  • Have oversight of junior girls’ and boys’ health and well-being
  • Clearly communicate KHSBC’s culture and expectations
  • Act as a strong role model, helping provide direction, mentorship and pastoral care
  • Help document attendance and training data for feedback to staff, athletes and parents
  • Assist with boat selection, squad and program development
Desirable Qualities & Experience:
  • Tideway coaching experience
  • Good understanding and practical experience of coaching sculling to juniors
  • Level 2 Powerboat Licence
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a team
  • Experience working in a junior or school rowing programme
  • Excellent organisational and planning abilities
  • Passion for the sport of rowing.
