Assistant Rowing Coach – Exeter College Boat Club, Oxford

Exeter College Boat Club (ECBC) are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Assistant Coach for the next academic year.

ECBC is one of the oldest clubs in the country, being over 200 years old. Both the M1 and W1 sit near the top of Div II for Torpids and Eights, and the boat club are looking to bring them into the first division this year. This Summer Eights, the M1 achieved highest blades on the river for the second year running, and our W1 reached the highest they have ever placed on the river.

This boat club is well-equipped, training both on the Isis and at Godstow, and consistently train four to five boats throughout the year, with an aim of fielding eight crews at VIIIs. An applicant should be comfortable coaching a wide range of abilities. The top priority is maintaining a fun and inclusive atmosphere whilst pushing our top athletes to the highest levels. It is vital that any applicant can keep a balance between healthy competition and inclusivity.

The season is based around the intercollegiate bumps races in March and June, with training largely being based around preparation for this. There will also be opportunities to compete in external regattas and head races throughout the year, such as HORR, HRR, Bedford Amateur Regatta, and Reading Amateur Regatta.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Coach in planning and delivering sessions.
  • Coach water sessions as required by the head coach. These will mainly
    be on the Isis but may also be at Godstow on occasion.
  • Coach land sessions at the Boathouse (Boathouse Island) where required.
  • Provide clear technical feedback to rowers and coxes.
  • Provide advice on crew selection and race plans.
Essential Criteria
  • Availability during term time to coach sessions (mornings,
    evenings, and weekends).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head coach and
    Captains.
  • Ability to give focussed technical feedback to rowers and
    coxes.
  • Positive, committed, and enthusiastic.
  • Previous experience rowing or coaching at a high standard.
Desirable Criteria
  • Familiarity with Oxford college rowing, particularly bumps.
  • Previous experience coaching novice rowers.
  • Understanding of / experience coxing
  • Good understanding of boat rigging and equipment.
  • RYA2 powerboat licence.
  • Availability for training camps in January and April.
