Newark Rowing Club – Head Coach

Newark Rowing Club are looking to secure a new Head Coach for the start of 2026 Regatta Season. The position will be on a self-employed basis and will suit an enthusiastic and proactive individual who has a track record of success and inclusiveness.

The key objective for the role is to maintain and build upon the successes achieved by the club over the past five years. These have included multiple medallists at both national and international events, Tideway Head Pennants and producing Henley Royal qualifiers.

The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for building and operating an overarching coaching programme that will support all sections of the club. These include an ambitious and successful junior squad; established women’s and men’s senior and masters’ squads; and a steady stream of newcomers and those who are wishing to return to the sport after a break.

The individual will work with a team of dedicated volunteer coaches to enable all sections of the club’s active membership to realise their potential and to maximise the rowing enjoyment of every club member.

Responsibilities (tactical)
  • Create and implement a safe and effective training programme by tailoring coaching to meet the needs of a range of ability levels, which provides:
  • A sustainable performance culture and development path for athletes with ambitions to compete at the higher levels within the sport.
  • An inclusive programme to facilitate a fulfilling personal experience for those members that do not wish to compete at the highest levels.
  • Plan, deliver and coach the water-based sessions, as well as all indoor/circuit sessions to promote current rowing and physical conditioning techniques.
  • Track and monitor the progress and performance of the club’s athletes.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of trailers and trailering of boats to events
  • Utilise and organise the available volunteer coaching resources within the club
  • Contribute to maintaining the Boat House and the equipment to a high standard including the routine checking of boats, launches and equipment for damage and ensuring that the boathouse and gym area is clean, tidy and in good order.
Responsibilities (strategic)
  • Assist the Club Captain in maintaining an atmosphere of mutual support and respect between individual members and squads
  • Promote the safeguarding and welfare of the club members
  • Involvement in initiatives to recruit new members to the club, including establishing / maintaining contact with local feeder schools
  • Organisation of rowing camps and training weekends
  • Work closely with the Club Captain, Vice-Captains’ and coaching volunteers within the Rowing
  • Management Team (RMT) on all rowing matters, including the targeting of events, crew selection, and equipment requirements.
  • Maintain up to date squad details and work with Club Officers to ensure that athletes are paid-up members of the club.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of behaviour as an ambassador for NWK, both on and off the water.
  • Work in conjunction with and support the NWK Committee to increase participation in inclusive sessions in a safe and sustainable way.

  • RYA Launch Licence

Conditions
  • The role will report to the Captain of the Club with an annual review of results conducted at the end of the Regatta season (September).
  • Upon appointment, a contract with NWK RC will be signed by both parties.
