Wallingford Rowing Club – Part Time J14 Rowing Coach

Wallingford Rowing Club seeks a part-time rowing coach to manage their J14 intake, approximately 40 Juniors starting Sept 2025

About the role

Working under the instruction of our Directors of Junior Rowing, and with volunteer coaches/parents to help whenever possible, you will be responsible for a squad of approx. 40 J14s from their first day of being club members in September through to Brit Champs in mid-July. You will also help with coaching our J15s and J16s on an ad hoc basis, within the hours below and when your J14 responsibilities allow.

You will be on the river, in our gym or in the school gym, depending on squad requirements, daylight, weather and river conditions. You will be responsible for up to 40 J14s on the water at any one time, with appropriate help of volunteer coaches/parents. There is also an allowance for attending up to 10 days of racing per year, heads or regattas, to look after the J14s.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching the J14s about safety on the water and on land; ensuring they train in a safe environment and that all activity is strictly within British Rowing and Wallingford RC’s welfare guidelines; teaching them basic technique on the water and on ergs; teaching them about valuing and caring for equipment, especially boats and blades; improving their basic fitness and core strength; preparing them for races in crew boats and/or singles; preparing them for the next stages of the Junior programme at Wallingford RC (ie. for J15s and above.)

A bit about you

  • You must enjoy working with children, in particular with 13/14 year olds who may have little experience of competitive or water-based sports.
  • You must have previous rowing experience, either as an athlete or a coach.
  • You should be enthusiastic, flexible and able to adapt to different demands on a day to day basis.
  • A knowledge of boats and equipment, and the ability to make simple repairs (eg. refitting a shoe, adjusting blades) is desirable.

Salary: £20.60 per hour for an expected annual remuneration of £11,135

Type: Part-time. 12 hours per week Sept-July. 16.00-18.00 on Fridays 14.00 to 18.00 on Saturdays and Sundays 16.00-18.00 on Mondays plus attendance at up to 10 races
