Rowing Guide for the Games

The aim of the game is to be the first boat to cross the finish line at the Olympic and Paralympic finals.

The ParalympicGB rowing squad for Rio 2016 is announced at the Henley Royal Regatta

To get there, crews have to compete in heats and semi-finals (depending on the number of crews entered). For certain boat classes, crews that don’t qualify for the semi-final could have a second chance to make it through in a repechage race.

Don’t know what a repechage is? Check out our Rowing Lingo page.

Depending on the progression, winners and second position in the repechage may progress to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, a top three finish gets the crew to the final, where crews race to be the first to cross the finish line and crowned Olympic or Paralympic champion.

Some useful rowing facts about...

..the racing in Rio:

  • It is the only sport where competitors cross the finish line backwards.
  • The Regatta course is 2km long and six lanes wide. Up to six crews compete in each race.
  • The Regatta will take place on the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the heart of Rio. It is just ten minutes from Ipanema beach and with a spectacular backdrop of mountains, the Tijuca Forest and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue at Corcovado.
  • In the Paralympic classes, we have qualified four out of four boats for 2016.
  • The Paralympic rowing programme starts on Friday, 9 September and finishes on Sunday 11, September.
  • Racing is scheduled for 8.30 am Brazil time, 12.30 pm London time, except for the Finals’ Day on Saturday, 13 August which are due to start at 9.30 am Brazil time and 1.30 pm London time (all subject to weather conditions).
  • The first GB rower in action in Rio was Alan Campbell in the heats of the men’s single scull heats on Saturday, 6 August. The Paralympic Regatta is scheduled to conclude with the mixed legs, trunks and arms coxed four final on Sunday, 11 September.
