Do I need a DBS check to do a Level 2 coaching course?

Criminal Records and Barred Lists checks are linked to specific roles within clubs for which a risk assessment has been carried out. They should only be applied for if your club welfare officer has asked you to do so. There is no link between holding a DBS (formerly CRB) certificate and being able to participate on or complete a Level 2 course.

Two people are standing for election as CWO at our club, but I think that the person who is most popular may not be well suited to the role. What should I do?

Club Welfare Officer is not an elected role. The CWO should be appointed by the Club Committee on the basis that they have the appropriate qualities to fulfil the responsibilities of the position on behalf of the club. Clubs should aim to appoint someone as CWO who will be able to stay in post for at least three years.

I am a CWO. Do I need to ask volunteer junior coaches to supply references as well as applying for a Criminal Records/Barred Lists check?

Yes. Please see the British Rowing Safeguarding & Protecting Children Policy (Safer recruitment in Rowing) which can be downloaded from the Guidance Documents page of our website.

All persons who will have Significant Access to Children, or who hold a Position of Trust with the Children with whom they come into contact, must first be vetted to establish whether they have any criminal convictions or other past behaviour that suggests they are unsuitable to work with Children, or may present a risk to Children. Existing volunteers or employees who change their role must also complete the same vetting process:

  1. Complete an application form. This will help assess the applicant’s suitability to work with Children, based on their skills and competencies as well as eliciting information about an applicant’s past.
  2. Provide a self-disclosure about any matter that might influence their suitability to work with Children.
  3. Provide two referees.
  4. Provide details of previous volunteering experience or relevant employment.
  5. Provide evidence of their identity (such as a driving licence with photo or passport).
  6. Complete a Criminal Records Check at the enhanced level for the specific role.

Who is responsible for Safeguarding at clubs?

Within the club environment everyone has a responsibility to be aware of the Safeguarding & Protecting Children Policy, to understand what good and poor practice are and know what to do if they have a concern. All club members and volunteers should have access to the policy document at the club or be made aware that it can be accessed through the British Rowing website.

How can I update my Safeguarding skills?

British Rowing recommends that you update your Safeguarding and Protecting Children skills every three years. SPC courses are run across the country, throughout the year – please refer to our latest welfare guidance  “3.11 Safeguarding Training Interim Guidance” for more information about what you need and where you might be able to access the training.
