Safeguarding and Protecting Children

British Rowing has developed an NSPCC-accredited Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC) workshop.

This workshop forms part of the L2 coaching qualification, but can also be taken as a standalone course at a cost of £15 for members and £30 for non-members.

It is particularly recommended for Club Welfare Officers (CWOs), club officers, competition organisers, coaches, and other club volunteers taking responsibility for juniors.

For more information about times and locations of forthcoming training opportunities in your region, contact your local Area Participation Manager.

In April 2011, we launched our Time to Listen (TTL) workshops – developed in conjunction with the CPSU and Sportscoach UK – aimed specifically at CWOs who have attended an SPC workshop in the last three years.

As well as providing CWOs with the opportunity to meet their equivalents from other clubs in the region, the Time to Listen course is also designed to:

  • Improve awareness and evaluation of best practice,
  • Explain elements of legislation and government guidance that are relevant to the role of safeguarding children’s welfare,
  • Identify the specific roles and responsibilities of statutory agencies, including local safeguarding children boards.

Again, further details regarding these workshops can be obtained from regional Participation Team Leaders.

CWOs who would like to attend a TTL workshop but have not yet had an opportunity to take part in an SPC workshop are still encouraged to contact their regional Participation Development Team Leader, who will be able to provide details of forthcoming times and locations for both workshops.
