Vesta Rowing Club – Club coach, head of sculling squad

Vesta Rowing Club is seeking a volunteer head coach for its sculling squad.

About the squad

Vesta’s sculling squad trains and competes throughout the rowing season, in all classes of sculling boat. The squad was created in 2019 and has grown steadily, even through the Covid-19 pandemic. We are a competitive squad, racing in numerous head races and regattas, not just in Central London but around the South East. We recently ran a successful training camp in Bristol to prepare for 2022’s summer regattas.

We train at a stepdown level, less than our full senior squads, but we are more than irregular casuals. Our members train on land and water, to progress and race. We are a mixed squad, taking men and women. We are ambitious and our members are an important part of the greater club community. Our only main requirement is that scullers are proficient in a single to be safe on the Tideway portion of the Thames.

We’re supported by the larger community at Vesta Rowing Club. Vesta is one of the largest rowing clubs in the Thames region, with members ranging from novices to international-level competitors. We regularly compete in Henley Women’s and Henley Royal Regattas and are one of the Remenham Club founder clubs. We pride ourselves on being a friendly club, with a cheap bar and lively social life.

About the role

This is a volunteer position as head coach for our sculling squad, as we drive forward with more entries and wins in 2022-23 season. Primarily this is with our weekend water outings: we train late morning/early afternoon on Saturday and Sunday. But also to support and direct our land training, on the erg and in the gym.

As a step-down squad, we recognise our members have lives and jobs outside of rowing. Similarly, we understand you might not be able to attend every weekend. You are also welcome to join in our outings. You’ll be supported by enthusiastic members and the wider Vesta committee and club. Many of us are experienced rowers with several years’ experience.

We think this could suit:

  • Current coaches looking for head coach experience
  • Former coaches looking to get back into the community
  • Someone who wants to develop a group of dedicated rowers in their own direction
  • Someone who wants to coach, but periodically train alongside
  • Someone who loves rowing but struggles with the early mornings

We need your enthusiasm and commitment for the season. British rowing coaching qualifications and powerboat licenses preferred, but not mandatory. The club will seek to invest in your development alongside your commitment, including through formal qualifications if desired.

Application Dates: From Tuesday 7th June 2022 to Saturday 25th June 2022
