London Youth Rowing – Club and Talent Inclusion Lead

Pay and Hours

This is a full time role with a salary to be discussed depending on experience. The role requires working a five day week including one weekend half day minimum and regular evenings (exact schedule to be discussed and confirmed with successful applicant) . Days in lieu of working additional hours must be arranged and agreed with your managers.

Role Purpose

This role is integral to LYR’s Talent Inclusion work and pathway. The role leads on the development of LYR’s Open Clubs and LYR Boat Club. LYR’s Talent Inclusion pathways aims to engage young people that would not normally get the opportunity to take part in rowing. Our Active Row programme, accesses schools in London and across the country, working with young people from diverse backgrounds. LYR’s Open Clubs are ‘stepping stones’ and watersports hubs, where youngpeople can ‘drop in ‘and take part in watersports in an inclusive, welcoming, and diverse environment. LYR Club offers the next step where young people can regularly attend sessions to develop their confidence on the water, life skills and take part in watersports in the way they would like. This role manages the pathway for young people and encourages them to get involved and embrace rowing and watersports further.

While in this role, you will consistently be working and focusing on your own development and experience as a coach and programme lead within the world of rowing and grassroots sports. While in this role, you will have the chance to shadow peers, have mentors within your team, and have support of your line manager and coach developer. Your development is at the heart of the programme, supported by your colleagues and using the framework of opportunities that LYR will offer, you will be responsible for making the most of your journey with LYR. LYR Boat Club

Reporting to the LYR Programme Director, Active Row & Life Skills you will:

  • Complete the ongoing administrative and operational set up and management of LYR BC
  • Launch and/or develop up to 4 open clubs located at the Royal Docks and Olympic Park (Newham) UL Boathouse (Hounslow) and Surrey Quays Watersports Centre (Southwark), aiming to build regular participation at each to 25+ young people. Focus on working with the LYR Active Row coaching team to ensure that the Open Clubs places are taken up by young people progressing from the Active Row indoor and on-water taster/learn to row programmes.
  • Develop all aspects of the existing LYR BC, with the primary goal of creating a multi-sport watersports club that has inclusion and life skills as its key focus. Run LYR BC sessions to an agreed schedule at the Olympic Park and Royal Docks.
  • Build links to other junior rowing and watersports clubs to act as exit routes for young people taking part in LYR BC. Similarly, work with GB Rowing (and other NGBs as relevant) to understand and build links to their performance development pathways where appropriate, so that young people from underrepresented groups who are members of LYR BC can progress into talent pathways if they want to.
  • Work with the LYR data manager, SMT and external research groups to gather insights into what is working with the programme and what is not, with the aim of informing the detailed design of Year 2 and Year 3 of the project.
  • Coordinate with the LYR Mossbourne team to ensure that their contribution to the Talent Inclusion project and related research work is aligned with the LYR BC work.

Coaching Sessions

  • Planning and preparing sessions for participants of various skill and ability with inclusion and life skills as the focus
  • Engaging participants in safe and fun sessions
  • Monitoring and recording all the necessary data for sessions that you are leading on or responsible for
  • Evaluating and reporting on the progress of participants and sharing feedback with them directly as well as with the group leader and your managers
  • Reporting any incidents, damage or safeguarding concerns using the correct channels
  • Leading sessions both on land and on water

Person Specification

Experience

  • Previous experience of co-ordinating a programme
  • Experience of working in rowing with young people from under-represented groups is a positive
  • Experience of working both independently and as part of a team
  • Rowing experience and holds L2 Rowing Coach qualification
  • Understanding and experience using technology
  • Previous experience of working independently and remotely
