Paralympic Head Coach - Para-Rowing Squad
Nick is the Head Coach of the GB Paralympic squad
Nick Baker joined the GB Rowing Team in the Autumn of 2013. In 2014 he guided Tom Aggar to a silver medal in the ASM1x at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, and coached Rachel Morris to fifth place finish in the ASW1x; this marked a promising start to her rowing career – she had only switched from Paralympic cycling to rowing in February 2014.
Nick’s coaching success continued in 2015: both Tom Aggar and the newly formed TAMix2x of Lauren Rowles and Laurence Whiteley took home silver medals from the World Championships in Aiguebelette.
The Rio Olympiad culminated in great success for Nick’s crews. Having started the TAMix2x project only two years previously, with Lauren Rowles aged just 16, she and Laurence Whiteley produced a textbook performance in Rio to win the A final by just over a length and set a World record time. Tom Aggar also finished in style, regaining his place on the Paralympic podium with a bronze medal.
In the Tokyo Paralympiad, Nick led the PR3 Mix 4+ to three World Championship golds and a Paralympic gold.
In 2022 Nick was promoted to Paralympic Head Coach. In his first year leading the squad the team produced three gold medals and a bronze at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Racice.
Nick started sculling as a youngster at The Windsor Boys’ School BC and was a successful junior international rower, competing for GB between 2004 and 2006.
Prior to joining the GB Rowing Team coaching team, Nick attained a biology degree and qualified as a personal trainer. He loves dogs/animals and has two Alaskan Malamutes at home.
Nick is a big fan of David Attenborough, and owns the full collection of his wildlife documentaries; his three ideal dinner guests would include Peter Jones, Walt Disney and Lee Evans.
