Deben Rowing Club Celebrate a New Clubhouse

Deben Rowing Club in Woodbridge, Suffolk will officially open its new riverside premises tomorrow (Saturday 4th September). Dr Therese Coffey, MP for Suffolk Coastal, will be present to declare the building open for business.

Situated near the famous Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial ship site, Deben Rowing Club is in a rural and very picturesque position. The development will provide the club with superb facilities transforming it into a rowing centre for the surrounding area, including the population of Ipswich which is only ten miles away.

William Notcutt, Vice Chairman of Deben Rowing Club, said, “It is immensely satisfying for the members to be able to complete the project, enabling rowing on the Deben to be securely based from our wonderful new clubhouse. Our thanks go to the local community who have supported us and our funders who have understood what we wanted to do. The new facility and new boats will enable us to get more people afloat to enjoy the sport than ever before.”

Deben have also joined Explore Rowing, the flagship participation initiative of British Rowing. The national programme aims to add another 10,000 people to the figure of 55,000 who are currently rowing at least once a week. As part of its Explore Rowing package, Deben will receive seven brand new stable boats, consisting of two quads, two doubles and three singles, provided by Swift Racing boats. 

Explore Rowing Programme Manager Richard Stock said, “The new boathouse provides rowers with enviable facilities and greater opportunities locally. Plus, the Explore Rowing boats will not only make it easier for people to learn to row, but will hopefully inspire the current members to tour the River Deben and take up rowing challenges elsewhere.

“Explore Rowing is about making the sport work for different lifestyles. Whether rowing competitively or purely for enjoyment, the River Deben is a great place to row. I’m looking forward to exploring it myself!”
