Dry and Wet Start - indoor and water-based activity

Project Oarsome, the British Rowing-funded scheme to link schools with clubs, was launched by Sir Steve Redgrave (the president of British Rowing) in 2000. Over £3 million of rowing equipment has been provided to Clubmark-accredited clubs that have linked with at least two state secondary schools.

During the winter coaches go into schools to deliver health and fitness activity based around the use of indoor rowing machines. In the summer, young people are invited to clubs to experience water-based activity in a friendly environment.

At the end of the summer young people are invited to join the club. This scheme has proved to be very successful since it was launched. A scheme evaluation and further information available if you look at Case Studies.

The programmes involved are 'Dry Start', using indoor rowing machines, and 'Wet Start', which builds links to clubs for water-based activity.

We do not support rowing programmes for children under the age of 11, except under carefully controlled circumstances and so the schemes are designed for use in secondary schools.
