Suspended Clubs: Water Safety Audit *updated 03/02/2012*

The deadline for online submission of the 2011 Club Water Safety Audit was Saturday 31 December 2011. The following clubs have not yet submitted the Audit, and are therefore suspended from racing. Clubs will be allowed to race as soon as they submit their Water Safety Audit and it is accepted by their Regional Water Safety Adviser.

In the run up to a summer of Row for Gold events – British Rowing’s programme to give everyone the chance to join in and feel part of the Olympic Regatta – the workshops are designed to help clubs attract new rowers and volunteers and keep them engaged in the sport.

Three weeks left to vote for your coach!

Less than three weeks remain to cast your vote in the Perkins Slade Coach, You’re the Best! competition, with two rowing coaches in the running to win £1000 of sports equipment.

James Wilton and Seamus Reynolds lie fourth and fifth on the leader board, with 397 and 375 votes respectively.

Advice for the prevention of Weil's Disease

British Rowing has been advised of several new cases of Weil’s Disease on the River Itchen, Southampton.

Five people are thought to have contracted the disease after canoeing on the Hampshire river in November, though only one case has been confirmed by the Health Protection Agency.

British Rowing bucks the trend

For the first time ever British Rowing membership figures have shown a year on year increase of 2000, at the end of 2011.

An exciting start to 2012 for rowing, in what is generally considered to be a challenging economic climate for sport.  

The December 2011 rise in membership for British Rowing shows a total figure topping 27,000, compared to less than 25,000 in December 2010. Registered members are only a percentage of those who row, so this reflects a very pleasing picture for the sport as a whole.

Stratford rowers brave the elements for Boxing Day regatta

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club rowers braved the cold and damp on Boxing Day, competing in a scratch regatta for the club’s Juniors, Seniors and Veterans.

Over 35 rowers and scullers took part, watched by over 100 onlookers.

The winning coxed four was truly representative of the Warwickshire club – with a Veteran, two Seniors, and two Juniors topping the final standings.

Help change time for sport

The Sport and Recreation Alliance needs your help to support its Lighter Later campaign – which aims to encourage more people to take up sport by moving the clocks forward by one hour throughout the year.

The SRA believes that more sunlight in the evenings would see more people engaging in sport and recreational activities in the lighter evenings, and is asking for increased support as the Bill approaches its third reading on 20 January 2012.

British Rowing Champs: 'we need to try something new'

At a meeting on 26th November, Council congratulated the British Rowing Championships working party on its proposals to restore the status of the Championship as the premier event in the British Rowing calendar. Improving the racing experience for all, encouraging a greater range of entries, and showcasing the sport. These were the challenges the group set out to tackle, and Council gave full support to the view of the working party that they could not be resolved by ‘tinkering around the edges’.
