British Rowing is sad to report the death of Ralph Bird.

Ralph was President of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association and sadly passed away on Monday of this week.

The family have requested that there be no flowers but donations for Ralph’s chosen charity the Sunrise Appeal.

Torbay Regatta

"Torbay Royal Regatta had to be abandoned with ten of the 28 scheduled races on the programme remaining. Conditions were not ideal at the start of the regatta with lumpy seas, but the major problem was launching boats from Hollicombe Beach."

Third Annual Fixed Seat Rowing Camp

October 10th and 11th saw the third annual Fixed Seat Rowing Camp held at Stithians Reservoir in Cornwall. The camp was run by British Rowing scholarship coach Rhiannon Halliday, whose post is funded by the Henley Stewards Charitable trust. The weekend benefitted from funding from the West Regional Rowing Council, which contributed to costs such as venue and equipment hire and coaching.

The 2009 under 14 county championships, held at Hayle Pool proved to be a successful day, especially for the clubs involved in the HSCT scheme in Cornwall. 27 crews from Devon and Cornwall took part on the day. A total of 7 crews were fielded from the 3 clubs HSCT coach Rhiannon Halliday has been working with.

Gig Rowing World Championships

The 20th Annual World Pilot Gig Championships take place this weekend, 1st to 3rd May, on the Isles of Scilly.

This is the biggest event of the year for the sport of pilot gig racing and this year is set to be the largest with over 110 boats entered.

Eddystone Challenge - never again?

The foul weather alternative to the Eddystone Challenge is a 20 mile row up and back down the River Tamar which separates Devon and Cornwall. Participants have to cope with strong tidal flows and avoid rocks, ferries, and vessels from the local naval base.

Sportsmen comes in all shapes and sizes, but at the World Pilot Gig Championships at the Isles of Scilly at the weekend, they won't come with a much bigger age total than one of the local crews that will be taking part in the popular event.

West Region Club Development Workshop

On January 20th the ARA ran a Club Development workshop for clubs from the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA). The workshop was the first of its type for CPGA clubs, and was attended by over 50 club volunteers.

The delegates were first given a short overview of the various projects in development between the ARA and CPGA, including the development of a Level 2 award for fixed seat coaches. They then received presentations designed to help support them with aspects of club development, including obtaining funding, volunteer management and club development plans.
