Choosing a club for a junior

British Rowing has more than 300 affiliated clubs offering rowing for juniors. Many of these are schools but increasingly there are clubs up and down the country offering taster sessions for the beginner junior rower.

In rowing the starting age is normally between 11 and 13 years, although of course some will have a go earlier and many take it up later.

All British Rowing clubs with junior members must have a Club Welfare Officer and adhere to our Safeguarding and Protecting Children policy. There is also an accreditation scheme called Clubmark and clubs who have this are supported by British Rowing coaching and development officers to ensure that the required standards are being met.

Use Club Finder to look for a suitable club near you.

Take a look at our Welfare section to see the steps we take to safeguard our young rowers.

If you are mystified by some of the terminology your new rower is using we hope you will find our About Rowing section helpful.
