The Annual General Meeting and a Council meeting were held on Saturday 27th September 2008 at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Below is a brief update, the minutes of the meeting will be published when approved by Council.

2008 Olympic Regatta
The International Manager was warmly congratulated on the team’s Olympic and Paralympic success in Beijing and Council fully supported the proposal to hold a reception for the athletes and the team in recognition of their tremendous achievement.
ARA Structure
The proposal to amend the Articles of Association to allow a Chairman to stand for a third term of office was unopposed at the AGM. In the light of this there followed a lively debate at the Council meeting on the timing of a Chief Executive Officer appointment for rowing.
ARA Subscription Rates
The rates would remain the same for 2009. There was support for a reduction in the student subscription rate and this would be discussed for 2010.
ARA Strategic Plan 2009 – 2013
The plan has been submitted to Sport England with future funding for the sport at stake. The vision statements for rowing are:
‘new participants through new activities’
‘rowing for life through clubs with excellent facilities and well-supported volunteers’
‘inspiration through success on the world stage and at London 2011’
Once minor amendments have been made, the Strategy will be on the website and the outcome of the ARA’s bid should be known in December. Small groups are being set up to work on the detail and the action plan.
Boat Identification
From 1st April next year the Boat Identification scheme in use in the Thames Region will be extended to all regions. More about Boat ID here.
Competition Review
The committee wished to thank everyone who had responded to the consultation. Five proposals intended to improve the current racing status system were all approved in principle, to be included in the 2009 Rules of Racing. Read the proposals.
