Living Sport School Games

Cambridge University’s new sports centre hosted this year’s winter Living Sport School Games indoor rowing competition. 72 indoor rowers competed in three different event classes: Year 9, Year 10 and KS4 Aspire (RowAbility).

The first race of the day in the Year 9 Girls’ event set the tone for the day, with Hannah Towns (Longsands) and Fern Easton (Peterborough School) finishing joint first with 957m, and Martha Pierce just six metres behind finishing with 951m.

Not to be outdone in their second heat, Hollie Setchel (Soham Village) and Ghazal Seidi (Parkside) also tied for second place with 927m.

But it was Pip King of Peterborough School who put in the best performance of the day, with a hugely impressive 1009m.

In the Year 9 Boys’ event, Tom Hunter from Hinhingbrooke School ended up a clear winner (1122m), and in the Year 10 Girls’ Rebecca Burton (Comberton Village College) took the win with 1337m.

The Year 10 Boys’ event was won by Jason Lau (Peterbourogh School) with 1452m, and an exciting end to one of the heats saw Mathien La Paz Wade (St Bedes) putting in a last-minute sprint to tie with Dan King (Soham Village) on 1406 meters.

The relays also saw some extremely close racing, with Peterborough managing to hold off Soham Village by 1.9 seconds in the heats of the 2016 Year 10 event. Peterborough went on to take the overall win in the finals, beating Comberton Village College by 0.8 seconds in two very close races.
