Get into Rowing

Find a club near you

There really is more to rowing than competition.

It's not all about those early mornings training sessions in the wind and rain! Increasingly, rowers are enjoying the social and recreational side of the sport too and there are clubs, events and opportunities all over the UK which cater for every individual.

Rowing is a great sport to take up which helps to get fit and healthy, enjoy the fresh air and make great like-minded friends.

Follow our a quick and easy four-step guide below on how to get started.

Get into rowing

Step 1. Find your local club
  • The first step in getting started in rowing is to find your local club. You can use our handy club finder above
Step 2. Contact your club
  • At most rowing clubs you can just turn up and ask to speak to the club captain and getting started (though if the club captain isn’t around you’ll find that any club member will happily help you out!)
Step 3. Have a go
  • Whether you have booked a learn to row course with your potential club or are attending a taster session it’s important to get out there and enjoy the experience.
  • You don't need to worry about bringing any special equipment or your own boat.  It would be advised to bring a water bottle and to wear warm clothes that won't get caught up in the boat whilst rowing. (Remember to bring a change of clothes for afterwards - rowing is an outdoor sport so you may get a bit wet.)  And of course, bring your own enthusiasm!
Step 4. Enjoy it!
  • Most clubs will be able to offer you a range of experiences and there are several different types of rowing you can take part in.  Our new Explore Rowing programme has been launched specifically to help you get into rowing whatever your age, ability, goals and time commitments are.   If you want to race, most clubs have racing groups and almost all regattas offer novice racing so you can race people of your own standard. To find a club near you use our Club Finder above. If you live in Scotland or Wales, please check with Scottish Rowing and Welsh Rowing.
