Stephen Rowbotham

Stephen Rowbotham.JPG

Stephen raced in the men's quadruple scull at two of the three World Cups of the 2010 Series, Munich and Lucerne, and won a bronze medal on both occasions.  This World Cup season has seen the quad step up and establish themselves as serious contenders on the World Stage.

In 2009 Steve raced in the World Cup Series, winning gold in the M2x in Banyoles.  At the World Championships in Poznan he and his partner Matt Wells narrowly missed an A-final place, a disappointment as Olympic medallists, and then unfortunately Wells was unable to race in the B-final due to injury.

He won a bronze medal in the men's double scull at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games showing real class in a very challenging field, missing silver by four hundredths of a second.  This was the first British men's Olympic sculling medal since 1976 and the culmination of an exceptional 3 years in the double with Matt Wells.  In 2006 they won World Championship bronze and were 4th in 2007.

Steve started his sporting career as a top level tennis player, playing county and regional level before moving to Belgium for three and a half years.  He learnt to row at Durham University in 2000 under Wade Hall–Craggs.  He graduated from Durham in 2003 and was selected that year for the World U23 Championships in a double scull with Alan Campbell but was unable to compete.

Steve won a silver medal in the single at the FISU World University Championships in 2004, his first major international success after the frustration of narrowly missing selection for the Olympic Games in Athens.

In 2005 he raced in the men's quad, becoming the first British crew to win a world level medal in this class by taking the bronze in Lucerne and followed this with 7th place at the World Championships.

Steve is Lottery Funded through UK Sport.
