Paul Mattick

Paul Mattick.JPG

For the 2010 World Cup Series, Paul raced in the lightweight men's four winning gold in Munich and Lucerne and silver in Bled.  This was an exceptional World Cup season for the four in a very competitive field.

At the 2009 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials, Paul narrowly lost the Final of the lightweight single to Rob Williams who became his crewmate for 2009.  Having chosen to make the move from sweep to sculling Paul raced through the 2009 World Cup series in the Olympic class double scull, taking 4th in Banyoles and Munich and 5th in Lucerne.  At the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan Rob and Paul were 6th.

Paul raced in the lightweight men's four at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and finished 5th, having been World Champion in that same boat in 2007.  He has competed in the lightweight men’s sweep squad at  World Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

In 2007, Paul finished 4th in the lightweight men’s single at the 2007 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials in Belgium.  He won bronze in the lightweight men's four at the Linz World Cup, silver at the Amsterdam World Cup and gold at the Lucerne World Cup.  The crew went on to win gold at the World Championships, the first ever lightweight Olympic class gold for GB!

In the 2008 World Cup series he raced in the lightweight four winning silver followed by a 5th and 6th place.  At the 2006 World Championships the British lightweight men's four reached the final in exciting style and took 5th place.

In 2005 he raced in the lightweight men's four at the Eton World Cup in May. He won a bronze medal in the lightweight men's pair with Daniel Harte at the Munich World Cup in June, finished 5th in the same event at the Lucerne World Cup finals and went on to win the B Final at the World Championships in Japan.

Paul began rowing in the 2000/2001 season for his college, having previously played club rugby to a high level for Frome RC. He studied Physiology and Pharmacology at Leeds University and has completed a PhD at Oxford University.

Whilst at Oxford Paul competed in the lightweight reserve boat.  He then joined Wallingford RC in 2003 to learn to scull under the eyes of Rob Dauncey and Pete Sudbury.

Paul is Lottery Funded through UK Sport.
