Bill Lucas
For the 2010 World Cup Series Bill raced at Bled in the GB second men's double scull with Sam Townsend, gaining a silver medal in a remarkable GB "one-two" behind Matthew Wells and Marcus Bateman. For the next two World Cups, Munich and Lucerne, he raced in the men's quad where he won a bronze medal on both occasions. This World Cup season has seen the quad step up and establish themselves as serious contenders on the World Stage.
Although still U23 Bill Lucas gained a place in the senior men's quad for the 2009 World Cups in Banyoles and Lucerne, winning silver at each. Unfortunately he then came down with an illness and was unable to compete at the World Championships in Poznan.
Bill rowed originally at Dart Totnes Rowing Club and he credits his first coach and mentor Will Hawkyard with much of his early success. He was discovered through the GB Rowing Team's Start Programme, sponsored by Siemens, in 2004 and in 2005 he rowed in the GB junior quad at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Brandenburg, finishing 5th. He took a gap year from GB Rowing in 2006 to complete his A Levels and in 2007 was selected for the World U23 Championships winning a bronze medal in the double with Charles Cousins. That same year he was also a reserve for the senior team.
In 2008 Bill was part of the men's quad which narrowly missed Olympic qualification. He then teamed up again with Cousins at the World U23 Championships where they showed their class winning the gold medal to become World U23 Champions.
Bill graduated last year in Politics and International Relations at Reading University. His best non rowing achievement was climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in 2004.
Bill is Lottery Funded through UK Sport.
