Alastair Mckean

Alastair was selected in the LTA coxed four for the 2008 Paralympic Games and won a bronze medal.

Alastair started rowing in 1994 at Herne Bay Amateur Rowing Club. A talented junior rower, Alastair won coastal junior and junior-senior titles before being involved in a serious road accident in 1999.

In 2005 Alastair was invited to join the GB Adaptive Rowing Team, having passed all the trials to make his debut at the World Rowing Championships in Gifu, Japan. He rowed in the LTA coxed four, winning gold. Alastair was in the LTA coxed four again in 2006, successfully defending their title at the World Rowing Championships at Eton.

Alastair is still an active member of the club and contributes greatly to rowing in the local community. He regularly visits local schools to represent the sport of rowing and to promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle to young people.

A qualified teacher, Alastair has worked at Canterbury High School teaching geography and history. He also coaches rowing at the University of Kent and at the King's School Canterbury.
