Start

We identify, recruit and develop individuals to become Olympic rowers.

The programme was established in 2001 with funding from the National Lottery. Graduates of the Start Programme have gone on to win Olympic, World and European medals – find out more about Start’s successes here.

How the programme works?

We have a number of Start Centres set up around the UK and athletes recruited onto the programme will be a member of one of these centres.  Each centre is “hosted” by the local rowing club and all Start rowers will be a member of their host club.

The GB Rowing Team employs a full time professional coach in each Start Centre. This coach will be responsible for the recruitment and development of athletes.  As part of this development all Start rowers attend regular testing camps which bring all centres together so that athletes’ progressions can be monitored.

How are people recruited onto the programme?

Start recruits its athletes by using a number of tests to help identify whether an individual has the potential to perform at an Olympic level.

Anthropometric Testing
Rowing favours tall people, making use of long levers to move the boat.  Your height, weight and armspan will be measured as part of our testing.

Strength Testing
Strength is important in rowing. We will use a Concept2 Dynometer to produce an overall picture of your general body strength.
