Nick Beighton
At the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, Nick raced in the TA mixed double scull with Samantha Scowen, finishing 6th.
Nick is a new member of the GB Rowing Team Adaptive Squad and raced in the TAMix2x with Samantha Scowen at the first World Cup of 2011 in Munich, where they won the bronze medal. A promising start for such a new pairing.
Nick is a serving Captain in the British Army with the Royal Engineers, having been commissioned from Sandhurst in 2006. In October 2009 he was injured whilst fighting in Afghanistan and has spent the last 18 months recovering, undergoing rehab and learning to walk on prosthetic legs.
He started rowing because he wanted to do something completely new and to prove to himself that he could achieve something different in his life after being injured. He first sculled in July 2010 at Guildford Rowing Club as part of the rehabilitation programme at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. This followed his attendance at a Paralympic talent ID day at Brunel University in February 2010 through the BattleBack programme where he was made aware that the squad was looking for a male TA rower.
Nick has now been deployed to train full time with the GB Rowing Team's Adaptive Squad whilst still seriving in the Army and this gives him the chance to show whether he can be a realistic selection candidate for the 2011 Worlds.
Nick lives with his partner of 8 years, Alexis, who is currently a serving Captain in the Army but she will begin retraining as an Occupational Therapist in September this year. He was a passionate rock climber and mountaineer prior to his injury, making various trips and expeditions to the Himalayas, Andes and Alps. He is still able to climb, ski and snowboard and hopes to get back into the mountains again one day.
