He was originally a talented swimmer, racing the 1500m for GB at the European Junior Championships in 2004 and achieving a world ranking of 72. His older sister also represented GB at swimming.
He was selected for the GB Rowing Team's Start Programme, sponsored by Siemens, in 2006. That year, after just 9 months of rowing, Dan won the elite single sculls at Marlow Regatta and Senior 2 single sculls at Metropolitan Regatta.

Dan raced in the men's eight at the 2009 World Championships in Poznan, finishing 5th, after the crew achieved a direct A-Final qualification from their heat by overhauling Australia on the last stroke.
